Understanding How Dental Insurance Works
The key thing to understand about dental insurance is that it works slightly differently than standard health insurance. Dental insurance, by in large, is more focused on helping people prevent dental issues rather than treat them. By knowing this single fact, you’ll be able to get the most out of your plan year after year. Be sure to keep this in mind as you read on.
What Your Dental Insurance Plan Covers
Most dental insurance plans offer coverage that looks something like this:
- Preventive care is covered 80-100% (checkups, cleanings, fluoride treatments, dental sealants, X-rays).
- Basic restorative care is covered 70-80% (fillings, bonding)
- Advanced restorative care is covered 50% (crowns, bridges, dentures, extractions, root canal therapy)
- Cosmetic services are typically NOT covered because they are elective procedures (teeth whitening, porcelain veneers, gum recontouring)
Using your plan to primarily pay for preventive services has two benefits. First, you’ll spend little to nothing out of pocket at these appointments, and secondly, these treatments will go a long way in helping you avoid the need for more involved services that receive less coverage.

OC Dental Studio is an in-network provider with many PPO dental insurance plans, meaning we’re able to offer patients the highest level of savings possible. However, if you don’t see your plan on the list below, we may still be able to use it to help you save. You’ll probably be pleasantly surprised by how much, because unlike with health insurance, visiting an out-of-network dentist doesn’t always mean you’ll end up paying significantly more.
