How to Handle Common Dental Emergencies
The best thing you can do in any dental emergency is reach out for professional care as soon as possible. When you contact OC Dental Studio, our team will walk you through first-aid and let you know if you should come to see us right away. In between the time of your call and when you step into our dental office, here are some strategies to deal with common dental emergencies:
Toothaches
Rinse and floss around the tooth to dislodge any food debris that might be caught between the teeth. This often solves the problem entirely, but if it doesn’t, take an OTC medication and apply a cold compress to the face until we can see you.
Chipped/Broken Teeth
Recover as many pieces of the tooth that you can and put them in a safe container. Be sure to bring them to our dental office. In the meantime, use a cold compress to reduce any pain or swelling, and be sure to cover the remaining tooth with some sugarless gum or dental wax to prevent it from cutting the inside of the mouth.
Knocked-Out Tooth
A fully dislodged tooth can only be replanted within a couple of hours of the initial accident, so you need to move quickly in this situation! After finding the tooth, rinse off any debris, and keep it wet until we can see you—this will help the tooth stay alive. You can do this by putting it back into the socket, holding it between the cheek and gums, or storing it in a container with milk or saltwater.
Lost Filling / Crown
While a loose/ broken restoration might not be cause for panic, it’s still a good idea to have one repaired as soon as you can to prevent the newly exposed tooth from developing any decay or damage. After giving the restoration a nice rinse, try to place it back onto the tooth, using a bit of toothpaste if it won’t stay put.
How to Prevent Dental Emergencies
Fortunately, avoiding the majority of dental emergencies is relatively easy. You just have to keep the following tips in mind:
- Wear a protective mouthguard every time you engage in sports.
- Don’t use your teeth to open packages or bottles…this can easily chip them!
- Be careful when eating particularly hard, chewy, or sticky foods.
- Maintain your oral hygiene at home and get regular dental checkups—most dental emergencies are caused by small issues going untreated for a long time, and these practices will make sure that doesn’t happen.
